Since 2018, we have been supporting the children of Lachine and their families free of charge, following the community social pediatrics approach.

🧭 Our approach

What is community social pediatrics?

Community social pediatrics is an approach developed by Dr. Gilles Julien. It brings medicine, law and the social sciences together around the child to understand their whole situation: their health, their development, their living environment and the respect of their rights.

At the CPSC de Lachine, every child is welcomed together with their family, with no complicated appointments and no fees. An interdisciplinary team (physicians, nurses, psychosocial workers, therapists) assesses the child’s needs with their parents and builds a coordinated action plan with the school and neighbourhood partners.

How we support a child

Follow Léa, age 8, from her first visit to the day she starts smiling again.Léa is a fictional name. Her story is drawn from several real situations, to protect the privacy of families.

Step 1
A first call
Léa’s mom is worried: her daughter isn’t sleeping well and cries before going to school. She calls us. We welcome her with kindness, and our clinical coordinator takes the time to sit down with her to understand their needs and see how we can help. This is what we call the pre-assessment.
Step 2
Welcome to the Centre
We then invite Léa and her family to visit the Centre. Our reception manager takes the time to play with Léa so she feels at ease, and she is offered a snack. Léa then joins the assessment and referral meeting, where the team takes the time to understand her whole situation. Léa has her say.
Step 3
One plan, all together
Together with the family, the team builds an action plan, bringing the school, our partners and trusted people in Léa’s life around the table. The family chooses who to invite. Everyone knows how to help Léa, and no one acts alone.
Step 4
Support, day by day
Léa takes part in art therapy, the nurse keeps an eye on her health and a worker helps her mom with the steps she needs to take. The plan is adjusted as the weeks go by.
Step 5
Léa thrives
A few months later, Léa is sleeping better, smiling again and daring to raise her hand in class. Her rights are respected, and her family knows they can count on us.

📖 Our story

A centre born of Lachine’s community spirit

The Centre de pédiatrie sociale communautaire de Lachine was founded in 2018 through a partnership between the Arrondissement de Lachine, the West Island health establishment (now Santé Québec Ouest-de-l’Île – Universitaire) and the community. Since then, 565 children have been supported, including 160 in 2025-2026.

A non-profit organization and registered charity, the CPSC offers completely free services to children aged 0 to 17 in Lachine and their families.
